I've been trying to resolve this issue for a couple of weeks now and am getting a bit frustrated. Sony Vaio also have not been able to help (suggesting I reinstall the software again). I've tried everything suggested by tech support (including checking audio settings and updating drivers (though the computer is brand new). I don't hear the noise during any initial music on the disc (eg for producers' logos) before the main title. The noise gets louder when the audio itself gets louder. The same discs play fine in other programmes such as Windows Media Player. But I still have serious problems with the audio: the clicking/crackling noise happens whatever DVD I play. Following instructions from Tech support I reinstalled the software and the first problem was solved. I've had two problems with the software: the menus wouldn't display properly for bookmarks, and the audio has a crackling noise when I play DVDs. I recently installed PowerDVD 10 on a new laptop (Windows 7 64 bit Realtek High Definition Audio).
